Mining Museum

Embark on a unique full-day trip from Tallinn to the Estonian Mining Museum and the charming coastal town of Sillamäe. This Ida-Virumaa Mining Museum and Sillamäe Town Tour allows you to explore Estonia’s industrial history and Soviet secrets. First, we begin with a comfortable bus ride from Tallinn to the Estonian Mining Museum in Kohtla-Nõmme.

Upon arrival, you will descend 8 meters below ground to explore a network of mining tunnels. Equipped with a helmet, coat, and lamp, you will personally experience the working conditions of miners, see original equipment, and even ride an underground train used daily by the workers.

Furthermore, above ground, the Enrichment Factory showcases the process of oil shale energy production and offers insights into the future of energy. The museum features interactive displays and educational programs that delve deeply into the history and technology of mining, making it suitable for visitors of all ages.

Sillamäe

Next, we take a short stop in the charming coastal town of Sillamäe. During this stroll, you will learn about the uniqueness of the Ida-Viru region. In the 19th century, Sillamäe was a popular resort town, attracting notable figures like composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky and physiologist Ivan Pavlov.

However, during the Soviet era, it became a secret city, not appearing on maps, due to its uranium enrichment plant that contributed to the Soviet nuclear program. The town was purposefully built in the Stalinist neoclassical style, giving it a distinctive architectural character that you won’t find elsewhere in Estonia.

One of Sillamäe’s main attractions is the Mere puiestee (Sea Boulevard) and its promenade. A grand staircase leads from the town square down to the boulevard, which is lined with historical buildings and culminates at a gazebo by the sea.

Finally, after your walk, we enjoy a lunch break at a local restaurant (meal at own expense), and then return to Tallinn in the evening.
